2004 Palatina Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, Germany Name Story Palatina is named for the royal palace 'Aula Palatina' built by Emperor Constantine who encouraged the vineyards in this area to flourish around 300 AD. Winemaker Bernward Keiper Vineyards | Winemaking From the renowned Scharzhofberger, Kaseler Herrenberg, and Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyards. Low-yielding vines in slate soils on intensely sloped terrain. Native yeasts, slow stainless steel fermentation and gravity flow winemaking to protect the purity of the fruit. Grapes 100% Riesling. Picked: November 1–15, 2004. Tasting Notes Aroma: Apricot, peach and grapefruit. Taste: Apple and peach with intense mineral notes and an elegant and racy finish.

2003 Palio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo - Abruzzo, Italy Name Story Palio is named for an annual race in the teramo province of Abruzzo where teams compete for a prize by rolling barrels through the streets. Winemaker Roberto Cipresso Vineyards | Winemaking Hand-picked in small baskets from hillside vineyards that face the Adriatic. Cooling sea breezes temper the hot days and allow for full ripeness and balance. Clay and limestone soils. Temperature-controlled fermentation and aging in oak casks. Grapes 100% Montepulciano. Picked: October 10–14, 2003. Tasting Notes Aroma: Blackberry, loganberry and plum with hints of nutmeg and cinnamon. Taste: Blackberry, cherry and wild strawberry.

2003 Setena Red Terra Alta, Spain Name Story Setena is the Catalan word for one-seventh—the amount of the harvest that farmers in ancient Spain paid landowners for the right to work the land. Winemaker Xavier Clua Vineyards | Winemaking Old vines on well-draining clay and chalk soils high on the terraced hills southwest of Barcelona. Cold fermentation and extended maceration. Aged for 8 months in French oak barrels (70% new). Grapes 40% Garnacha, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Syrah, 10% Tempranillo, 10% Merlot. Picked: September 18–October 5, 2003. Tasting Notes Aroma: Black cherry, raspberry and cranberry with toasty notes. Taste: Raspberry, Morello cherry and plum with sweet tannins and refreshing acidity.

Tasting Notes Aroma: Intensely floral with apricot, vanilla and anise notes. Taste: Apricot, pear, citrus and hazelnut with a velvety finish.
